The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at Northeastern University offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduate students receive a high quality classroom based education in conjunction with industrial work experience as part of our top rated cooperative education program. Graduate students work with our world renowned faculty to achieve research experience and their career goals.

Soyster Gets High Honor
MIE Professor Allen Soyster received the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Lifetime Achievement Award which is the Institute of Industrial Engineer’s highest and most esteemed honor.

Awarded for Alternative Power
MIE Professor Yiannis Levendis has been awarded the 2013 George Westinghouse Gold Medal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for numerous in-depth contributions to the field of combustion of liquid and solid fossil and alternative fuels under conventional and oxy-fuel conditions, as well as to the formation mechanisms of generated pollutants and the development of methods for their control; and for educating thousands of students on environmentally benign power generation-related courses/projects.

Breaking Healthcare Barriers
Working with Indiana University, MIE Assistant Professor Ayten Turkcan Upasani was awarded $159K by PCORI to develop an efficient system to make sure underinsured people get the healthcare they need.

Organizing Healthcare
Kendall Sanderson, IE’13, is fulfilling a life long dream of increasing the efficiency of the healthcare system by working with Professor James Benneyan at the Healthcare Systems Engineering Institute.

Best Season Ever!!
The Northeastern Mini Baja team took 2nd place in the endurance test and 3rd place overall out of the 100 teams that competed at the BAJA SAE Tennessee competition resulting in the best finish in the team’s history.
