Advanced Standing CreditIn certain cases, you may be able to receive credit for a Lowell Institute School course without actually taking the course. Such credit is known as "advanced standing credit" (ASC). You may receive advanced standing credit at the Lowell Institute School by transfer of credit for courses taken at another institution, by CLEP examination, and by proficiency examination. These three methods of receiving advanced standing credit are described in detail in the following sections. Transfer of CreditsYou may receive, subject to the approval of the Academic Standing Committee, credits for academic work completed in other approved schools, colleges, or universities if the following criteria are met: The content of the course being submitted is equivalent to that of the corresponding course at the Lowell Institute School; the grade achieved in the course submitted is C or higher; and the remoteness of the time of study does not negate the use of the course submitted as a prerequisite for further course work. If you desire advanced standing credits by transfer, you must fill out the Petition for Transfer Credit. You should also ask the registrar of the institution(s) previously attended to mail an official transcript to the Lowell Institute School, 120 Snell Engineering Center, 360 Huntington Avenue, Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts 02115. Students seeking transfer credit should allow at least four weeks for processing transfer credit from the point when all official transcripts and the petition for transfer credit have been received. Since the process of evaluating transfer credit is complex, students should not expect evaluation of their transcripts during counseling sessions. College Level Examination Program (CLEP)The Lowell Institute School awards college credit under the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). This program is designed to enable individuals who have reached college-level education to demonstrate their achievement through testing and to receive college credit applicable toward a degree program. The examination measures basic proficiency in the arts and sciences. After paying the exam fee and receiving a passing score, you will be awarded advanced standing credit. For more information, please contact the Lowell Institute School office (120 Snell Engineering Center, 617.373.2500). Proficiency ExaminationsIf you are a matriculated student in good academic standing and you do not meet all the criteria for the normal transfer of credits but are able to supply evidence of sufficient knowledge of a technical subject, you may petition for a proficiency examination. Knowledge can be demonstrated through job experience or by completing noncredit continuing education courses such as those offered by Northeastern's Building Design and Construction or State-of-the-Art programs. After paying the proficiency examination fee and demonstrating proficiency as indicated by the examination, you will receive advanced standing credit. You can receive advanced standing credit for a maximum of three courses by proficiency examination. For more information, please contact the Lowell Institute School office (120 Snell Engineering Center, 617.373.2500). Credit for Work ExperiencePlease see "Proficiency Examinations" above.
