Registration
Registration ProcedureRegistration can be made in any of the following ways:
A registration form for fax and mail registration is published in the Lowell Institute School Schedule, published each semester. To download the course registration form, please click here. The Lowell Institute School has an open enrollment policy. As long as you have the proper prerequisites or their equivalent, you can register for any of our courses. Planning Your Course ScheduleIn addition to this catalog, you will find the following publications useful in planning your course schedule.
All these publications are available from the Lowell Institute School office (120 Snell Engineering Center, 617.373.2500). It is important to remember that most courses are not offered every semester. If you need help planning your schedule, please contact a Lowell Institute School academic adviser. PrerequisitesBefore registering for a course, you should read the course description in this catalog or in the Lowell Institute School Schedule, published each semester, to determine whether you need to have taken the prerequisite course(s). In order to ensure academic success, students are advised to adhere to course prerequisites. It should also be noted that prerequisite courses taken so far in the past that the student now retains minimal information will not suffice; in such cases, the student should either undertake extensive review of the prerequisite material or retake the prerequisite course. Registration DeadlinesOfficial registration deadlines are scheduled for each semester during the academic year. We strongly recommend that you register for courses before these registration deadlines. While we are always happy to accept registrations after the deadline, University regulations require Lowell Institute School officials to review registration statistics immediately following the registration deadline. Any course that has insufficient enrollment at that time must be cancelled. For this reason, registration before the deadline is recommended as your primary defense against course cancellation. (Remember that it is not necessary to pay tuition at the time of registration. Tuition is not due until the end of the first week of class, regardless of when you register.) ElectivesMany program curricula require students to complete electives. The electives give students the opportunity to gain extensive knowledge about topics introduced by the core courses and to explore topics beyond the curriculum's scope.
Changes in RegistrationYou can change your course registration by filing a Course Drop Form at the Registrar's Office (120 Hayden Hall) for courses you wish to drop and registering for courses you wish to add. These changes can also be performed via the Telephone Voice Response System, for more information please click here. We suggest that you make these changes before the registration deadline, if possible. Full-time Day Students Taking Lowell Institute School CoursesUndergraduate full-time day students registering for Lowell Institute School part-time courses may do so only to clear deficiencies or to follow a program approved by the appropriate program coordinator. Undergraduate full-time day students may register for part-time courses only by completing the Petition Registration Form, available in the Lowell Institute School office (120 Snell Engineering Center), by the end of the first week of the semester. Such students must not fill out any other part-time registration materials. Approval of the program coordinator must be obtained if the course does not appear on your approved program sheet. Approval from the Department of Cooperative Education is required if you take more than one course during a co-op term. Upon completion, approval, and submission of the registration form, you will be registered automatically for the course. If the course is a substitute for a day course, the latest grade received is considered for calculation of the quality-point average. If your name does not appear on the part-time roster, you will not be admitted into the class unless you have an approved registration form. In all instances, undergraduate full-time day students must adhere to the academic and administrative requirements of the part-time course. Lowell Institute School Students who need to enroll in SPCS coursesThe School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) offers English, chemistry, social science, humanities, and communication courses that are requirements for several Lowell Institute School (LIS) majors. Please note that SPCS operates on the quarter calendar, while LIS is currently in semesters. Therefore, SPCS courses will have different credit values, tuition rates, and start and end dates from the LIS courses. The 2004-2005 tuition rate for the School of Professional and Continuing Studies is $242 per quarter hour. The Spring 2005 quarter for SPCS begins on March 7, 2005, and ends on May 21, 2005. The Summer 2005 quarter for SPCS begins in June and ends in August. Lowell Institute students interested in School of Professional and Continuing Studies courses should contact the Office of Enrollment and Student Services at 617.373.2400 for a current schedule of class offerings, or visit the SPCS Web site at www.ace.neu.edu/spcs. LIS students should register through the School of Professional and Continuing Studies for any SPCS courses. For any SPCS course you take you will receive a SPCS transcript. Once the course is complete, you may file a transfer credit petition with the LIS Office (120 Snell) to make arrangements for your SPCS coursework to be transferred back to LIS. The course will be posted to your LIS transcript in semester hours, and the grade will be computed as part of your LIS GPA. Any LIS student who is receiving financial aid and wants to register for a School of Professional and Continuing Studies course MUST meet with a financial aid counselor in the Office of Student Financial Services, 139 Richards Hall prior to enrolling. Your financial aid eligibility and status could be jeopardized if you enroll without speaking to a counselor. Registrar's OfficeThe Office of the University Registrar can be contacted as follows.
