    • The 2013 International Symposium on Electrokinetic Remediation
      Professor Akram Alshawabkeh is chairing the 2013 International Symposium on Electrokinetic Remediation in Boston at Northeastern University from June 23-26, 2013. The annual EREM Symposium provides a venue to present and discuss recent developments in electrokinetic and electrochemical remediation and is attended by world-renowned experts in electrokinetics.

      Northeastern University hosts ASCE-SEI Panel Discussion
      The Technical Committee on Aesthetics in Design of the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers is sponsoring a series of panel discussions around the country related to Design in a Time of Change, speaking about a combination of emerging issues facing design professionals, ranging from turbulent economic conditions that have lasted several years, coupled with ongoing deterioration of our national civil infrastructure, coupled with increasing issues related to energy security, sustainability, and global warming. The first of these national panel discussions took place at Northeastern University on Thursday, October 18, 2012, 5:30-9:00 in the Raytheon Amphitheater. The participants, including both architects and civil engineers, feature Matthys Levy, renowned structural engineer and author; Mike Davis and Josiah Stevenson, Boston architects and experts in sustainable design strategies; and Northeastern Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty, including Professor Matt Eckelman on the panel and Professor and Chair Jerry Hajjar as moderator of the panel discussion. The event was free and open to the public and all were encouraged to attend.

    • Northeastern University Hosted the 2012 Wind Engineering Workshop
      Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Luca Caracoglia was the Chair of the 3rd American Association for Wind Engineering Workshop held in Hyannis, MA on August 12-14, 2012. The event was supported by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering. This event, the third in a series of workshops, is held every 18 to 24 months by the AAWE. The workshop attracts 60 to 80 people from around the United States and Canada, presenting the state-of-the-art in wind engineering. The event was co-chaired by Professor Partha P. Sarkar, Iowa State University and AAWE President.

      Hajjar Featured on WGBH's Innovation Hub
      Jerry Hajjar, Professor and CEE Department Chair, was featured on WGBH's Innovation Hub to talk about his recent grant on "Design for Deconstruction" from the National Science Foundation. He was joined by Mark Webster, senior structural engineer and project co-investigator from Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, to discuss their research on developing new structural systems that may have their components deconstructed and refabricated rather than recycled at the end of the useful life of a building.

    • Northeastern University Hosted the 2012 NSF CMMI Engineering Research and Innovation Conference
      Northeastern University hosted the 2012 NSF Engineering Research and Innovation Conference for the Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI), held on July 9–12 at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts. The conference was aligned with the George E. Brown Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Quake Summit 2012, taking place July 11-13 at the same location. The conference, having the theme “Engineering Transformation through Partnerships“, served as the focus point for the division’s interactions, and brought together 1500 grantees and NSF program directors to exchange the latest information on the full range of research being conducted with grants from CMMI.

      Dedication of the Fenway Special Needs Garden
      In fall 2010 and spring 2011, Northeastern University American Society of Civil Engineers (NUASCE) completed the Special Needs Garden (SNG) project in the Back Bay Fens in Boston. The Special Needs Garden was originally a Chapter project in 1998 when Northeastern University American Society of Civil Engineers established the Garden under a request from the Fenway Garden Society. The Garden, now newly upgraded and refurbished by Northeastern University American Society of Civil Engineers, serves people in the communities surrounding Northeastern University who have various special needs, by providing custom built planter beds that cater to those needs.

      2011 CEE Senior Day
      Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seniors were celebrated at the 2011 CEE Senior Day. The day began with capstone presentations from all seniors. This was followed by the CEE Brick Ceremony at which department award, fellowship, and scholarship winners were honored. The day culminated with the CEE Senior Luncheon, at which the CEE faculty and friends of the department joined the graduating seniors to thank the seniors for their time at Northeastern and wish them well in their careers.

      The Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Research in Smart Structure Technology (ANCRiSST) held its 5th Annual Workshop in Boston, MA, USA on July 29-31, 2009. This consortium was established in 2002 and consists of twenty research institutions. Conference coordinators included Profs. Sara Wadia-Fascetti and Ming Wang.
