Droplet-based processing of Mg alloys for the production of high-performance particulate and bulk materials (NSF)

Objectives

- Production Mg-Zn-Y alloy sheets with microstructures stabilized/strengthened by various secondary phases such as icosahedral quasicrystalline phase, Mg24Y5 and/or X-phase (Mg12ZnY).

Approach

- Mg-Zn-Y sheets/deposits fabrication by spray deposition using capillary jet breakup.

- The thermal and solidification models development of the droplets and the deposit.

Broader Impact

- Complete understanding of Mg-Zn-Y alloys during rapid solidification with the uniform-droplet spray and deposition processes to develop a novel processing route for the production of high-performance Mg alloys in the forms of particulate and bulk materials.
