ISPE Executive Board members (from left to right): Surabhi Godbole, Gabrielle Rabadam, Victoria D’Agostino, Stephanie Riofrio
Victoria D’Agostino is a fourth year bioengineering major with a concentration in cell and tissue engineering. She has a strong interest in bioengineering research, specifically studying ways to make medicine and biotechnology more accessible. Victoria loves mentoring children in STEM, and hopes to inspire and encourage young scientists and engineers.
The International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers is an extensive engineering professional organization with chapters in 90 countries and over 22,000 members from the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. Within this expansive network, the Boston Chapter is one of the largest and most active chapters, focusing on education, career development, and networking. And at the heart of this impressive professional society, nestled within the Boston biotech/pharma hub, is Northeastern’s student chapter, which this year was named ISPE Boston’s Student Chapter of the Year.
The mission of NU ISPE is to take advantage of the rich career opportunities in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in Boston, and to connect our members with those opportunities. We hope to educate our members about career possibilities in this diverse and growing field, and to help them develop their own careers. We do this by hosting career oriented events on campus and by keeping members updated on relevant Boston Chapter events. Past events have included hosting companies on campus to give presentations and to recruit for co-ops and for post graduate positions, curating panels of professionals and alumni, and organizing tours of on-campus labs. One event coming up in the spring semester is a networking luncheon with young alumni.
NU ISPE is led by a hardworking, dedicated, and motivated Executive Board. At the time of winning Chapter of the Year, four individuals made up the E-board: President Gabby Rabadam, Vice President Victoria D’Agostino (me), Secretary Surabhi Godbole, and Treasurer Stephanie Riofrio. It is thanks to each of these members that ISPE has flourished in the past years: expanding our membership, hosting increasingly high profile events, and focusing on sustainability of the organization. Gabby our President puts it best, saying our Chapter of the Year award is “a testament to the tenacity of this entire team and the overwhelming enthusiasm of our members.”
I began my involvement with ISPE in the fall of my sophomore year, by joining the E-board as secretary. At that time, Northeastern’s ISPE was not officially recognized by the university, and the entire previous leadership team had graduated, leaving the club a clean slate. Myself and three other students who were also brand new to the club came together and set lofty goals for the semester: to write the club’s constitution and become an officially recognized student group by the University. Together, we met these goals within our first year. From then on, I have stayed involved in nurturing the club’s growth, expanding it to new members, and now looking forward to guarantee sustainability. I have always enjoyed event planning and working behind the scenes to pull together our plans. My responsibilities have ranged from choosing the best refreshments (Chipotle, Georgetown Cupcakes, and more) to meeting professionals from the industry and recruiting them to join us for events. By far the best experience I have had being involved with this club is working with and learning from my fellow E-board members. It is such a rewarding experience to work with a team of people who are so enthusiastic about the organization.
This fall we have recruited five talented new E-board members: Jena LaMontagna and Nick Mortillaro as Alumni Liaisons, Susan Yu as Event Coordinator, Suha Yacoob as Recruitment Chair, and Sarath Alli as Marketing Chair. We are so excited to welcome these individuals to our leadership team and know that they have a lot to offer the group. I am sure that with creative thinking and passion we can continue to bring quality career development opportunities to our members and continuously improve the NU Student Chapter of ISPE.
