Revitalizing the Institute of Industrial Engineers

January 21, 2015

About Me

My name is Alejandro Moreno Amaral and I’m a sophomore majoring in Industrial Engineering and minoring in Math and Business Administration.  I am from Caracas, Venezuela and I am the current Vice-President of Internal Affairs at the Institute of Industrial Engineers at Northeastern University as well as a member of the Venezuelan Student Unity.

Revitalizing the Institute of Industrial Engineers

The Institute of Industrial Engineers’ mission is quite simple, we are committed to optimize our members' college experience by fostering an environment that promotes professional and academic development while collaborating with peers and networking with industry leaders. This is what we work on so hard throughout the semester, to enhance the experience of our members by engaging them on great activities.

I got involved with IIE because I wanted to take it further. I became a member as a freshman and regularly attended meetings. But in was in my second semester that I realized all the potential that the Institute had, it needed to be exploited. And that is how I became involved, we put together an amazing team and have been working since then. Personally, IIE means identity within the College of Engineering, it is this great place where you meet people facing the same challenges as you are and work together in order to overcome them. There is also something special about it, right now I feel that I am part of a big family.

Since last semester you could say that there has been a renovation regarding the status of the Institute as a whole. We have become an active organization on campus and that was reflected last semester where we had a full house for most of our events, we even had to move to a new place in order to fit the amount of people! But last semester was just the beginning, thanks to an outstanding group of people that have committed to work with the group (IIE Officers), we are really pushing the frontiers on the amount and quality of the activities that we will bring this semester. Some of our events from last semester included having Hasbro and Bose as speakers as well as coordinating a Six Sigma Green Belt training where we got more than 50 participants.

For this semester we have some great activities planned, below you can see a monthly schedule.

Moreover, out of all the activities listed I would love to highlight two of them:

The first one is the Lean Green Belt Certification:

When: February 6th, 7th & 8th

Note: The Location (on campus) and hours will be soon posted on our website

This three-day course provides an in-depth understanding of lean enterprise principles and how to apply them within your organization. It is important to note that this certification is open to any major and applicable to any industry. Your lean journey begins with a series of interactive simulations that demonstrate how each lean concept is applied and its impact on the process. Mapping the process flow and identifying the activities that add value from the customer's perspective is the cornerstone of this class. Participants will learn how to structure their organizations to support and continuously improve a lean process as well as understand how to implement 5S within their plants and how to begin reducing set up time using the SMED process.

The second one is the 2015 IIE Northeast Regional Conference, which Northeastern will be proudly hosting. We are thrilled to bring you a vast variety of speakers, as well as several exciting activities. This will be a great opportunity to network with industry professional and fellow Industrial Engineers not only from Northeastern but also from the whole northeast region. Don’t forget to register here. We hope to see you there!

When: Friday, March 20th to Sunday, March 22nd

Where: Northeastern University

Note: Exact location of events, schedule, confirmed speakers and more on our website.

As a final thought, I encourage you to join us, we are open for people that are as excited about IIE as us. I truly hope that you have a great semester and that you take advantage of every minute.
