Answering The Challenge - The National Academy of Engineering has issued the “Grand Challenges for Engineering” which includes restoration and maintenance of urban infrastructure. CEE Professors Sara Wadia-Fascetti and Ming Wang are leading the VOTERS (Versatile Onboard Traffic mbedded Roaming Sensors) project, which will develop onboard multi-sensor technology that will detect structural flaws in roads and bridges. Helping Stroke Victims Recover - Constantinos Mavroidis, Professor and Director of the Biomedical Mechtronics Laboratory, was featured by MIT’s Technology Review for his work in creating portable robotic devices that can be used in the rehabilitation of patients that have suffered a stoke. Chemical Engineering Students are National Champions - A group of 10 ChE students won 1st place at the National AIChE ChemECar competition in which they had to power and control a car by a chemical reaction. Trying to Keep the World Structurally Sound - Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Ming Wang has received funding from NSF, FHWA, and NIST to develop sensors for bridges and roadways to keep them safe. Wang is internationally recognized as in expert in monitoring the structural health of bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure. September 23, 2009
Congratulations to Joan Dela Cruz - Congratulations Joan Dela Cruz, BSME'13, who has won the Igor Sikorsky Scholarship which covers 50% of tuition for the first year. Sipahi Awarded $200K NSF Grant - MIE Assistant Professor Rifat Sipahi has been awarded a $200K NSF grant to reveal the complex interplay between the topology, time delays, and the stability of dynamical systems that couple across networks. Dialogue of Civilizations Project might lead to Bicycle Lane - After 6 students attended a month-long engineering class in the Netherlands on sustainable transportation, they have designed a method to add a bicycle promenade to the carriage path on Commonwealth Avenue. They gave a presentation to Newton residents during a recent City Hall meeting explaining their proposal. September 14, 2009
Sznaier and Camps Win NSF Award - ECE Professors Mario Sznaier and Octavia Camps have won a $415K NSF grant to develop new methods to extract information very sparsely encoded in extremely high dimensional data streams, with applications to aware environments, autonomous vehicles and systems biology. New Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Bioengineering - The College of Engineering is now offering a new interdisciplinary PhD Degree program in Bioengineering. ECE Junior wins 2-year fellowship in Information Assurance - Ryan Whelan, a junior in ECE, has been awarded a NSF Scholarship for Service Fellowship. Designed to increase and strengthen the cadre of federal information assurance professionals that protect the government's critical information infrastructure, this scholarship is administered through Northeastern's Institute for Information Assurance. Prof Erdogmus Receives Second Grant - Denis Erdogmus, an ECE Assistant Professor, has received a $500K NSF grant to develop a brain interface controlled icon-based language generation system that aims to increase speed of communication for persons with severe disabilities. New Energy Systems Master's Degree - Starting in the fall, the College of Engineering will offer a new degree for a Masters of Science in Energy Systems. Drop of Blood to Lead to Heart Health - Shashi Murthy, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering, is working on bringing his diagnostic tool, which will monitor a patients cardiovascular health to hospitals in the next couple of years. Historical Brooklyn Bridge Built to Last - Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Mishac Yegian has determined that the Brooklyn Bridge could withstand an earthquake that registers a 6.5 on the Richter Scale without any damage to its foundation. June 17, 2009

Prof. Gouldstone is Recipient of Best Paper Award - MIE Professor Andrew Gouldstone was the recipient of the Journal of Thermal Spray Technology Best Paper Award at the International Thermal Spray Conference for his paper "On the Role of Bubbles in Metallic Splat Nanopores and Adhesion". The work shows that the first hundred nanoseconds of liquid droplet impact strongly effects surface adhesion. June 3, 2009

Capstone students create 3D Computer Interface - Five seniors from ECE are the 1st place winners of the 2009 Senior Capstone projects.
