Tutoring in COE

Tutoring Philosophy

The COE Tutoring Program offers a wide variety of tutoring services to meet the academic needs of the NU undergraduate students taking courses in the following departments: Chemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering.

The COE Tutoring Program also offers free, drop-in tutoring available for first-year engineering students in Physics, Calculus, Chemistry, and General Engineering courses.

Before requesting tutoring support, students should always seek the assistance of their faculty by contacting them by phone, email, or by going to their office hours. To find out the office hours of an instructor, students should refer to the course syllabus, visit the department’s website or office, or contact the instructor of the course via e-mail.

Becoming an Upperclass Tutoring Fellow

Becoming a COE Tutor is a great on-campus part-time employment opportunity that offers many rewards. It is a powerful community-building experience. It allows for flex time; tutors set their own work schedule. It is a wonderful experience to have on your resume. Upperclass students (freshmen and transfers are encouraged to apply during their second semester at NU) may apply to become peer tutors by contacting the appropriate department representative.

    • African-American Institute
      Students who experience challenges in a specific subject area can take advantage of free tutoring services at the Institute. From the second week of classes until final exams, graduate students and faculty provide assistance in numerous subjects, including Biology, Business, Chemistry, English, Economics, History, Math, and Physics
    • BESS Tutoring Program (bess@neu.edu)
      Study Sessions are a weekly opportunity for members of BESS to get together with their peers to study and work on homework assignments in a conducive, stress-free environment. BESS currently the ability to provide tutoring for entry-level engineering courses, but aims to expand its resources to provide advanced tutoring in all engineering disciplines.

      Free peer tutoring services are available at the Biology Peer Tutoring Center. One on one tutoring appointments are available upon request. Please inquire at the Tutoring Center.
    • Chemistry (115 Hurtig, x4498)
      CHEM CENTRAL is staffed by graduate students and faculty for around 30-40 hours/week. In addition, one-on-one peer tutoring appointments on selective courses are available upon request.

      Chi Epsilon offers tutoring for select courses by individual appointment, check their website for available courses.
    • Disability Resource Center
      The Learning Disabilities Program (LDP) is a comprehensive tutorial program for students with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder. Content for tutorials is drawn directly from the student’s course work. Skills addressed may include time management, organization, reading comprehension, expository writing, research and study skills, and self-advocacy.

    • English Language Center
      Northeastern University offers English as a second language (ESL) and academic preparation programs for international students who intend to apply to an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a U.S.-based University.
    • Eta Kappa Nu (413 Dana, x5707, presidenthkn@gmail.com)
      Eta Kappa Nu, the National Electrical Engineering Honor Society provides FREE tutoring to all electrical engineering students. A schedule is posted outside the office door in Dana . Prof. David Brady is the faculty advisor.
    • International Peer Mentors
      The Peer Mentoring for International Students service (PMIS) goals are to integrate incoming international students into the larger NU community, provide a rewarding learning (academic and social) experience by actively engaging students, cultivate school spirit, increase community building among international learners, and increase academic achievement among international learners.
    • Mathematics (540B Nightingale, x2438)
      Math tutoring on an individual basis is provided in algebra, precalculus, or calculus. Students can sign up in 540B Nightingale Hall for a half-hour or hour long appointment, with the tutor of their choice and for a time that fits their schedule. This is a free service for Northeastern students.
    • Peer Tutoring Program (101 Lake Hall, x8931)
      The Peer Tutoring Program offers a wide range of tutoring services to meet the academic needs of the undergraduate students in many of the introductory level courses, as well as some of the upper-level courses in the NU Core. They offer tutoring in Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Journalism, Mathematics, and Physics.
    • Physics
      We have a drop-in Physics Workshop staffed by graduate students as part of their teaching assignment located in the Introductory Physics Labs in the 3rd floor Churchill. In addition, one-on-one peer tutoring appointments on selective courses are available upon request.
    • Student Athlete Support Services
      Tutoring is provided free of charge to all varsity student-athletes regardless of scholarship status. Athletes who request a tutor are provided with tutor contact information and it is their responsibility to make arrangements for the tutorial sessions.
    • Women in Engineering
      The Women in Engineering program connects students with mentors, tutors, career advice, financial aid, and other women in engineering - all the resources that promote success in engineering.
    • The Writing Center (412 Holmes, x4549)
      The Northeastern University Writing Center will offer assistance to any Northeastern University student who is currently writing a paper for any class (not just English courses!). Please call X3086 or stop by the Writing Center to make an appointment to review your paper. Students should bring a rough draft of the paper to your appointment.
  • The MyNEU Academic Guide provides Northeastern University students, faculty and advisors resources to help undergraduates make the most of their academic experiences. This central online source links students to a broad range of academic services including advising, tutoring, support centers, and enhancement opportunities, such as Study Abroad and Undergraduate Research opportunities.
