Configuring Mac OS X Mail.app for your COE account
- Open Mail.app (the built-in mail program in Mac OS X) and click on Mail, then Preferences.
- In the Preferences window, click Accounts. Click the + sign in the lower left corner to add a new mail account. You will see three tabs: Account Information, Special Mailboxes, and Advanced.
- In Account Information, choose IMAP as the account type.
- Fill in a description (something like "COE mail") of your choice, and fill in your Email Address (username@coe.neu.edu) and Full Name.
- For the Incoming Mail Server, put imap.coe.neu.edu.
- Type your username and password in the spaces provided.
- For Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), click on the default setting to pull down a menu, and choose Add Server. This will open a window captioned SMTP Server Options.
- In the SMTP Server Options window, put smtp.coe.neu.edu as the Outgoing Mail Server.
- For the server port, put 587 (25 should also work).
- Check the box to use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
- For Authentication, choose Password.
- Fill in your username and password. Then click OK to close this window.
- Back in the main Accounts window, click the Advanced tab. For IMAP Path Prefix, put mail. This is important!
- Check the box to Use SSL, and choose Password Authentication.
- Now make any choices you like in the Special Mailboxes tab. To use the same special folders that COE WebMail uses, check "Store on the server" for Drafts, Sent, and optionally Trash.
- Close the Preferences window. Mail.app should now log you in to your COE account. Select the folder "sent-mail", then click on Mailbox (at the top of your screen), Use This Folder For, and choose Sent. Do the same to use "drafts" for Drafts and "trash" for Trash if you like.
