Photo of Professor Hameed MetghalchiThe Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at Northeastern University offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduate students receive a high quality classroom based education in conjunction with industrial work experience as part of our top rated cooperative education program. Graduate students work with our world renowned faculty to achieve research experience and their career goals.

The department offers degrees at all levels (Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy) in both Mechanical and Industrial Engineering disciplines. Master of Science degrees are also offered in Engineering Management, Operations Research and Computer Systems Engineering (Computer Aided Design and Engineering Software Design). Students may also participate interdisciplinary doctoral programs with other departments and colleges.

Our undergraduate programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, Inc., (111 Market Place, Suite 1050 Baltimore, MD 21202). Students can minor in a wide variety of other university programs without interrupting progress in their undergraduate program or their co-op experiences. Students may also enroll in a five year BS/MS program with co-op. Fall 2006 enrollments were 530 undergraduate students (excluding freshmen) and about 225 graduate students, with 85 PhD students. Our undergraduate student chapters of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) are very active in inviting practicing engineers to campus and in many outreach programs. Our undergraduate students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities such as the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Mini Baja Competition, the Alpha Romeo Reconstruction program and the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Competition.

Our globally recognized faculty members, many of whom are Fellows of ASME and IIE, are actively involved in research in many different fields of mechanical and industrial engineering such as nanotechnology, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), thermodynamics, combustion, heat transfer, fluid flow, mechanics and design, materials engineering, composites, quality control, operations research, manufacturing, virtual environments, human-factors engineering, biomechanics, biosensors, robotics, tribology, information technology, and others. Research funding continues to increase, allowing support of full-time graduate positions in these fields.
