Energy Conference Highlights the Power of Collaborative Transformation in Clean Energy

George P. Sakellaris, President and CEO of Ameresco

Northeastern University’s Energy Conference 2018 (NUEC18), hosted and organized by the student-run Energy Systems Society, took place on September 28, 2018. The event, now in its fourth year, brought together 250 guests from eclectic backgrounds, ranging from faculty of different universities, industry professionals, students, and energy enthusiasts.

The Energy Systems Society or ESS as it is known, is a graduate academic student group associated with the Master of Science in Energy Systems program of the College of Engineering. The mission of the ESS is to offer a platform to all individuals to ideate high-tech, for economically feasible and perhaps socially radical changes in the current state of affairs to engage everyone in the Northeastern community, industry, and academia to take a more active role in energy, sustainability, and environmental issues.

The conference’s theme, “The Power of Collaborative Transformation in Clean Energy” spoke volumes about the commitment of the ESS to foster problem-solving through interdisciplinary thinking. Attendees were privileged to witness keynote speeches by proud and highly accomplished Northeastern alumni: George P. Sakellaris, President and CEO of Ameresco, and Pete McCabe, President and CEO of Onshore Wind, GE Renewables. Additionally, eight panel discussions were led by domain experts. Opening and closing addresses were delivered by Hanchen Huang, Professor and Chair of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern, and Hameed Metghalchi, Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Program Director of the MS in Energy Systems program at Northeastern, respectively. The Expo area facilitated the mingling of students and representatives of leading and innovative companies like Ameresco, National Grid, Veolia Energy, Schneider Electric, Engie, and Revision Energy.

It is rightly said, “No one can whistle a symphony; it takes a whole orchestra to play it.” The ESS is grateful to all of its sponsors, Northeastern University, keynote speakers, moderators and panelists, organizers, volunteers and everyone else who supported the conference; it would not have been possible without you!
