This talk will provide a general introduction to intellectual property protection, particularly patents and the process of academic technology transfer. Basic information about patents and patent law will be presented, including discussion of the types of inventions arising from academic or corporate research that might be patentable, what the requirements for patentability are, and how the patent process works. Patent programs will be discussed in the context of universities and other non-profit institutions, which have established programs and policies to identify patentable inventions and other research results having commercial value, and have created technology transfer offices to exploit such developments by identifying or creating companies to whom inventions would be licensed, to enable the commercialization of beneficial products. Introductory information about other forms of intellectual property, such as copyrights and trademarks, will also be presented.
