New Student Information & Orientation

GSE Orientation and Information

This page is designed to give you an idea of what to expect as you prepare for the beginning of your graduate studies.

Please be sure to log into your Apply Yourself account and "Accept Admission" and submit the tuition deposit. IF you cannot submit the tuition deposit electronically, you can send it to us by  submitting this form.

If you were not able to attend the Spring 2012 new student orientation on Jan. 4, please review the Orientation slides. Also feel free to drop by the GSE Main Office in 130 Snell Engineering Building to pick up an orientation packet. Otherwise, the most important step at this point is to contact your academic adviser and/or department of admission to obtain guidance on your degree plan and to register for courses.

Registering for Courses

In general, it is recommended that new students meet with their program adviser before registering for courses, and should take core courses before taking electives.  New international students will meet with their advisers immediately following the International Student and Scholar Institute’s orientation (more information below) held typically two weeks before the beginning of each term.  Domestic students can meet with their adviser and register for courses as soon as registration is available for their term of entry.  Departments will generally communicate directly with new students about such procedures.

The maximum number of credits that a student can register for in any semester is twelve (some restrictions may apply).  Students wanting to register for more than twelve credits must seek permission from their adviser. If a student wishes to take a course that is not officially listed as an elective, the student must get approval from their program adviser before registering for the course.

Some core courses and electives are available via our video streaming technology.

After advisers approve course selections, students may register through the myNEU student portal. The course schedules, academic calendars, and course descriptions are available on the Registrar's website.

Students planning to participate in the Cooperative Education Plan (Co-op) must take the zero-credit course ENCP 6000, Introduction to Cooperative Education, prior to seeking a Co-op assignment.  This course is generally offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters.

International Students

International Students are required to attend the International Student and Scholar Institute (ISSI) Orientation, please visit their website for further information.

Students Receiving Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Students with a Graduate Teaching Assistantship award are required to attend the University-wide Teaching Assistants Orientation. In addition, students whose first language is not English are also required to attend the International Teaching Assistant Orientation Program. Information regarding these orientations will be communicated directly to appropriate candidates.

Failure to report to the department on time, and failure to attend all events for which students are required to attend will jeopardize the student's Teaching or Research Graduate Assistantship appointment.

The Graduate School of Engineering is prepared to assist you in your transition. Please do not hesitate to contact our office for any help you may need.
