Instructions for Graduate Engineering Applicants


Thank you for your interest in the graduate engineering programs at Northeastern University. The Graduate School of Engineering offers degree programs at the Masters of Science and PhD levels on both full- and part-time basis. Please view our Graduate Degrees and Areas of Concentration before starting your application.

Applying now is easy with our new online application. Online applications are now REQUIRED. This system allows you to monitor the status of your application and view the final decision on your application. If you have a paper application, it is out of date and will not be accepted.

* Some programs will only consider part-time or transfer students for Spring admission. Please visit the respective program web site for further information.

Applications received after the stated deadline dates will be processed, however it may not be possible to have a decision rendered in time for you to begin taking classes.

To be enrolled in Northeastern University's Graduate School of Engineering, applicants must have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or in a closely related field2 from an accredited college or university.

Official transcripts of all previous undergraduate course work are required. Applicants are required to provide their transcript(s) in English. Request that the transcript(s) be sent directly to the Graduate School of Engineering. Please do not include high school transcript or any other certificates, as these documents will be discarded if received.

Letters of recommendation should be completed by someone acquainted with your academic and personal qualifications. Recommendations are made by using the online application system. A link is provided once you create your online account. Paper recommendation letters are no longer accepted and will be discarded if received.

TOEFL and GRE scores are to be submitted electronically by ETS. Photocopies will not be accepted and will be discarded if received. We accept IELTS scores4.

Please read the instructions for the Declaration and Certification of Finances (DCF) form. The DCF form and supporting financial documents should be mailed to the Graduate School of Engineering. These documents MUST be ORIGINALS. Photocopies will not be accepted.

All documents submitted must be ORIGINALS.

Please send only those documents required to complete your application package. Unsolicited documents will not improve your chances for admission and will be DISCARDED.

A complete application must consist of the following:

  Complete online application

  Application fee of USD $50

  Two (2) confidential letters of recommendation submitted through the online application system
4.
  Official transcripts from each college or university attended should be mailed to the Graduate School of Engineering.
5.
  Resume for the Cooperative Plan of Education (if applicable) submitted through the online application system
6.
  Statement of purpose (Ph.D. applicants only) submitted through the online application system

Official GRE scores3 are required of applicants who do not hold an undergraduate or graduate degree from an ABET accredited college or university within the United States.

  Official TOEFL scores3 are required by applicants whose native language is not English
9.
  Declaration and Certification of Finances (DCF) form (if applicable)

 

If you have applied to a program in the GSE last year, please submit a new on-line application and provide any new application materials, e.g. new transcript, updated resume, recent dated DCF form and supporting documents, etc.

Students who would like to transfer from another college or university must apply. Please refer to the information on applying as stated above. Course waiver and transfer credits will be evaluated upon acceptance.

All application materials received will be kept on file for a year. Application materials received by the GSE cannot be returned to the applicant or forwarded to any address.

1 GRA and GTA consideration is made by the individual departments, predominantly for Ph.D. applicants. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer assistantships to all those who are eligible.

2The Master of Science in Information Systems program and the Master of Science in Telecommunication Systems Management program will also consider applicants who have a bachelor's degree in a discipline other than engineering.

3Institutional code is 3665, no department code is needed.

4Minimum IELTS score is 6.5
