Jung Awarded $200K NSF Grant

Assistant Professor Yung Joon Jung, of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, has been awarded a 3-year grant from NSF to develop a new class of hybrid composite structures based on highly organized SWNT architectures and polymer materials, for high performance functional flexible systems.

Prof. Jung received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 2003 under the guidance of Prof. Pulickel M. Ajayan. At 2002, he worked as a visiting researcher at NTT Basic Research Laboratories (Device Physics) in  Japan. From 2003 to 2005 he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Rensselaer, and joined Northeastern University as an Assistant Professor in Sept. 2005, working in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and CHN Nanomanufacturing Center (NSF-NSEC).

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…" With an annual budget of $7.2 billion (FY 2014), they are the funding source for approximately 24 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.
