New Faculty Spotlight: Edward Beighley

Edward Beighley joins the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Fall 2013 semester as an Associate Professor. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Maryland, where he focused on quantifying the hydrologic impacts of urbanization. Ed brings both university and private sector experience with research that integrates hydrologic modeling, geo-spatial analysis and remote sensing. As a water resources engineer for Black and Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company, he designed water and wastewater treatment systems and developed models for optimizing water supply. As a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in the Marine Science Institute and the Institute for Computational Earth System Sciences, and as a faculty member in the Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering department at San Diego State University, he developed new approaches for integrating hydrologic modeling and remote sensing to study large-scale hydrologic systems. He holds a US patent for using sensor and telemetry technologies to perform real-time monitoring, analysis and visualization of environmental quantities and helped create Groundswell Technologies, Inc. He has over ten years of NASA-focused research experience including a New Investigator Award studying hydrologic scaling in global models, and working as a member of the Applications Team and advising the Science Definition Team for the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission. Most recently, Ed served as the Technical Leader for Hydrological Sciences Research at FM Global, a market leader in commercial and industrial property insurance, where he developed innovative techniques for estimating worldwide flood hazards.
