New Faculty Spotlight: Steven W. Cranford

Steven W. Cranford joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering during the Fall 2012 semester as an Assistant Professor. Prof. Cranford received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Memorial University and an M.S. in Structural Engineering from Stanford University. For his Ph.D. studies, he joined the Laboratory of Atomistic and Molecular Mechanics (LAMM) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, completing his doctorate in 2012 within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and affiliated with the Center of Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE). His doctoral research focused on multi-scale molecular dynamics and computational mechanical characterization of novel nanoscale systems, both synthetic (such as carbon allotropes and polymers) and biological (such as spider silks and amyloids), bridging atomistic to mesoscopic to continuum scales. His research and teaching interests in material design include work in nanotechnology in applications such as molecular filtration, high performance building materials, and self-healing structural components, as well as theoretical tools such as mechanical analysis of complex materials and performance-based design of biological tissues.
