Preventing Antibiotic Resistance
BOSTON HOSTS NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION INTER-DISCIPLINARY CENTER FOR HEALTH ORGANIZATION TRANSFORMATION (CHOT) FALL RESEARCH MEETING
The Center for Health Organization Transformation (CHOT) – a research collaboration between Northeastern University, Texas A&M University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Pennsylvania State University – held its annual fall meeting last week on October 16-17 at the Verizon Innovation Center in Waltham MA. The two-day meeting brought together over 4 dozen academic researchers, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and healthcare organizations to review the status of ongoing research, identify new areas for joint collaboration, and mentor graduate students in this emerging research area. Joint projects reviewed at the meeting focused on this past year’s five clusters – access and efficiency, patient-centered care, quality and safety, healthcare policy, and healthcare information technology – including oral presentations, panel discussions, and interactive poster sessions.
Co-funded by the National Science Foundation and industry members, CHOT is an Industry-University Collaborative Research Center that intertwines academia and industry in joint research to bridge translational research gaps. Since its founding in 2008, CHOT has completed over 5 dozen research projects across all problems facing healthcare today. Steven Wagman from Siemen’s Healthcare underscored this value, “Outstanding CHOT members are producing groundbreaking research on the toughest problems facing healthcare and preparing talented students to be future employees in the U.S. healthcare system”. CHOT members have included the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System, Grady Health System, Highmark, Lone Star Circle of Care, Massachusetts General Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Meadows Regional Medical Center, Morehouse School of Medicine, Northside Anesthesiology Consultants, Partners HealthCare, Seattle Children's Hospital, Siemens, Studer Group, Texas Children's Hospital, University of Texas Health System, and Verizon.
The Healthcare Systems Engineering Institute (HSyE) at Northeastern is a university-wide academic institute focused on broadly impacting healthcare through the integration of research, application, and education in systems engineering methods. The Institute houses four federally-awarded healthcare industrial and systems engineering centers, two coop and summer intern fellowship programs, and a post-doctoral development program, with core funding from the National Science Foundation, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, National Institutes of Health, Veterans Health Administration, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and health system partners.
