Concrete Canoe

Each year close to 200 American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapters build canoes made entirely of concrete.

Each year close to 200 American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapters build canoes made entirely of concrete.  The concrete mix, reinforcement, and mold are designed by each team with the goal of withstanding up to four rowers in endurance slalom and sprint races. Canoe competitions are judged by engineering professionals and the teams are scored on the canoe design, a design report, an oral presentation and a variety of races.

Our canoe team consists of over 40 undergraduate students who design the concrete mix and test close to 200 cylinders, design and construct the canoe mold, pour the concrete and perform a finite element analysis of the canoe under racing and vibrational loads during transportation to the race.

  • 4th place overall at 2018 ASCE New England Student Conference
  • 3rd place in 2016 New England Student Conference
  • 3rd place overall at 2014 Regional Competition
  • 6th place in 2011 Regional Competition
