EERI focuses on seismic activity, comprehension, damage control, and prevention. The student-run group is currently centered around the annual Seismic Design Competition. Each year, teams of students from around the world construct Balsa wood towers that are meant to resist three sets of earthquake motions. The first competition was held in 2003 but Northeastern competed for the first time in 2015.
The 2015 Seismic Design Competition was held in Boston and 38 different schools participated. Although around half of the towers collapsed by the end of testing, Northeastern’s design passed all three earthquake motions on the shake table.
