GRADUATE COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
Full-time master's degree students in the Telecommunication Systems Management
program are eligible to participate in the cooperative plan of education.
The goal of co-op is education. The emphasis of co-op is on technically
challenging assignments in the students' subject matter area and not financial
support for the students. All co-op positions must be approved by the Graduate
Co-op Advisor and are required to be paid positions. While on co-op students
must register for TSMG 6964, Co-op
Work Experience (formerly GSE G650), each semester. Based on feedback from the employer, students will
receive a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) grade for their co-op assignment.
The ideal co-op assignment is of 6 months duration, e.g., Spring
and Summer I, or Summer II and Fall semesters, although 8-month assignments
are also possible, i.e., Spring and Summer semesters, or Summer and Fall semesters. All co-op assignments must coincide
with Northeastern University's semester schedule and must be contained
within a calendar year.
Students must complete ENCP 6000, Introduction
to Cooperative Education (formerly GSE G001), prior to start of their co-op assignment. It is recommended
that students who are interested in a co-op assignment
take this course during their first semester at Northeastern. To become
eligible for the graduate co-op program, students must submit a completed
application and resume to the College of Engineering Graduate School Office
before the end of their first semester of study. Other eligibility
requirements include:
- master's degree candidacy;
- full-time enrollment;
- regular
degree status;
- at least one full semester at Northeastern; and
- grade point
average of at least a B (3.200) at the time a student goes on co-op.
TSM students need to have completed, or received waivers from, at least
two of the core courses of the program. Additionally, students who have
completed more than twenty-four hours of study are not eligible to participate
in co-op. International students need to have
received approval from the ISSI Office before starting co-op.
While on co-op students are allowed to take no more than 4 credits during each
semester. Furthermore, students cannot be on co-op during
their last semester of study. The maximum length of time a student can be on co-op during
his or her program of study is 8 months.
