Sinan Müftü received BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, in 1987 and 1989, respectively, and PhD degree in mechanical engineering from University of Rochester in 1994. He is a 1982 graduate of the Ankara Fen Lisesi. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Penn State, and research scientists at the Haystack Observatory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked on VLBI tape drives. He is currently a Professor of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, and has a secondary appointment as a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering. He was a visiting Associate Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of MIT during the 2007-2008 academic year and a visiting professor at Sabanci University during the Fall of 2017. He served in the executive committee of the Information Storage and Processing Systems (ISPS) division of the ASME between 2001 and 2005. He was the chair of this division in 2004. Dr. Müftü and his colleagues received the best paper award from the ASME ISPS division on several occasions. Dr. Müftü received the College of Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award in 2003, the Pi Tau Sigma, Outstanding Faculty Member in Mechanical Engineering Department, in 2007, Soren Buus Outstanding Research Award in 2013 and the Faculty Research Team Award in 2022. He was elected a Fellow of the ASME in 2007. His current research is focused on cold-spray additive manufacturing.
