Congratulations!

Beverly Jaeger, Richard Whalen, Susan Freeman, & Stanley Forman won Best Paper at the 2011 ASEE Annual Conference for their paper “Service-Learning vs. Learning Service in First-Year Engineering: If We Cannot Conduct First-Hand Service Projects, is it Still of Value?”

American engineers were heroes in the fifties and sixties. The space race focused the country on the need for engineering, and top students flocked to the profession. Today, engineering has lost its glamour. A survey found that more than 60% of adults don't even know what engineers do.

In order to provide the best possible engineering education, you need top students. That means we need to work together to help students see all the possibilities an engineering degree offers them. We need to join together to help Americans understand that our competitive edge is built upon innovation – and innovation requires talented, well-trained engineers. Individually, we can't change national trends. But, together we CAN make a difference.
